70th anniversary of Hyderabad merger today

September 16, 2018 11:52 pm | Updated 11:53 pm IST - HYDERABAD

All parties with the exception of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen will observe the merger of erstwhile Hyderabad State with the Indian Union on this day in 1948 on different names based on their political ideologies.

While the Congress, Telugu Desam, TRS and Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS) will treat the occasion to commemorate independence for Hyderabad, the BJP has dubbed it as liberation day from the autocratic rule of Nizam. The Left parties will observe it as the anniversary of the success of armed struggle against the tyranny of Nizam.

The BJP had been demanding since 1998 that the occasion be celebrated officially but the government did not concede. The ruling TRS had also not conceded the demand after assuming power though the party organised flag hoisting programme every year.

Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir will participate in BJP’s public meeting to mark the occasion in Suryapet.
