Team Anna defends demand for probe against Pranab

June 23, 2012 12:02 am | Updated 12:03 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Team Anna on Friday justified its demand for an independent probe into its charges against UPA’s Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee, saying a person aspiring to occupy the highest office in the country should be forthright.

The response came five days after Mr. Mukherjee’s office sent a letter that questioned the team’s “ethical behaviour,” even while rejecting its charges as “unfair” and “self-seeking.”

In its letter to Mr. Mukherjee, the team said, “it is unfortunate that your response conceals and distorts facts at several places.” The letter reiterated charges of irregularity in the Navy war room leak and Scorpene deal cases, which have been denied by the Minister’s office.

The letter, endorsed by Core Committee members Shanti Bhushan, Arvid Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan, Kiran Bedi, Kumar Biswas, Manish Sisodia and Chandramohan, however, didn’t carry social activist Anna Hazare’s signatures.

“The letter to Mr. Mukherjee has been sent to Annaji,” a core committee member said.

Team Anna has sought an independent investigation into charges of misdemeanour and irregularity against 15 UPA ministers, including the Prime Minister, failing which it planned to go on an indefinite agitation at Jantar Mantar here from July 25.
