A 16-year-old girl was stabbed by an engineering graduate at Azhunthalaipur near Pullampadi in a case of unrequited love here on Saturday.

Soon after committing the crime, the youth committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree.

According to police sources, C. Manikandan (22) was in love with the girl studying in Class 11 in a government higher secondary school in the neighbouring village.

When he expressed his love to her a few months ago, she rejected his advances.

He allegedly told the girl’s father about his interest in her and even handed him a letter meant for the girl.

The girl’s father rebuked Manikandan and took up the matter with his parents.

Upset over this, Manikandan, who had been following her when she was walking near Munsif Tank in the village on Saturday morning, picked a quarrel with her before taking out a knife and stabbing her on the neck and stomach.

After first aid, she was referred to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi as she was bleeding profusely. An emergency surgery was performed at the Tiruchi Government Hospital. Her condition is said to be critical.

“After stabbing her, Manikandan allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a tamarind tree.
