The passing of eight Ordinances within six months of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government coming to power is testimony to the authoritarian strain growing strong under the new dispensation, Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury has said.
Speaking at the 21st State conference of the CPI(M) here on Thursday, he said that only a “united Left and democratic front” could fight “the new ‘trimurthi’ of communalism, neo-liberalism and authoritarianism” that the government collectively represented.
The formation of a strong unified front was crucial when the electoral strength and the striking strength of the Left was at its lowest, he said.
The “trimurthi threat” was destroying the “secular, democratic foundation of the country,” said Mr. Yechury.
He said the consolidation of all unions for the coal workers’ strike, including the BJP-supported Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, was a “landmark” and an indication of the growing unrest against the “anti-people and pro-imperialist” policies of the government.
In such a situation, if the Left failed to strengthen itself and take along other democratic forces, the Right forces would continue to gain ground, he warned.
