Work on the shell structure of the ‘connector tube' under the elevated corridor at the Chennai airport has begun.

S. Bhaduri, Executive Director (Project), Chennai Airport, told The Hindu that the new facility would be ready in six months.

The tube would have space for passengers, who could walk from the new domestic terminal to the new international terminal and vice-versa.

The total cost of the work had been estimated at Rs.10 crore.

The tube would cover a distance of 600 metres and is part of the first phase of the airport expansion project. The illuminated, air-conditioned pathway would have transparent glass.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) would install travellator, for which space had been provided in the tube, in the second phase of the project.

The V-shaped columns under the elevated bridge were specifically designed to accommodate the pathway and walkalator. The outer side of the shell structure would have aluminium profile with glass.

The completion of the connector tube would coincide with the commissioning of both the new domestic and international terminal buildings.
