The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kahzagam government is yet to take a decision on the new Assembly-Secretariat complex on the Omandurar Government Estate, but work on the dome of the complex is progressing well.
After the change of guard, offices of the Chief Minister, Ministers and Chief Secretary have gone back to Fort St. George.
Pointing out that one more month will be required to complete the dome work, sources say that the structural component of the work is over.
What is being carried out pertains to the architectural finish, which is meant for protecting the dome from corrosion, given the proximity to the sea. Another work of a minor nature to be executed is the provision of an elevator for the dome.
Till recently, about 80 workers were employed for the dome work. In view of the new government's direction to the Public Works Department to get the old Assembly Chamber at Fort St George ready by the end of this week, most of the workers have been redeployed.
By June-end, all works concerning Block A will be completed. As of now, about Rs.480 crore has been spent on this block, which has six floors.
The work on Block B is under way and the deadline for completion is March 2012. Around Rs. 80 crore has been spent for this block.
In the interim Budget presented in February, the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government informed the Assembly that the revised cost of the complex project was Rs. 1,092 crore.
