Why not Govt. buses?

May 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST

I recently travelled in the Sathy-Ooty bus wherein the conductor shouted at all passengers to tender correct fare. I gave him Rs. 500 and obtained a ticket up to Yellanallai and asked him to give the change while I alighted from the bus at Yellanalli.

The Transport Corporation could do well to provide the conductors with as much change as possible so that frequent quarrels between the conductors and passengers could be avoided to a certain extent.

When private bus conductors have change to offer to the passengers, the Government bus authorities also need to do something about this.

Speed breaker needed

The crossroads at the Gemini Biscuit corner near Marapalam, Erode, on the way to Baby Hospital is a spot where a major traffic calamity is waiting to happen.

The speeding garbage lorries and tractors on their way to the Vendipalayam garbage dump and the innumerable school and college buses along with the heavy autorickshaw traffic carrying schoolchildren, cause traffic snags almost everyday in the morning and evening. Already, several minor traffic accidents at this place has occurred.

I request the authorities to kindly look into the matter and install speed breakers at this road junction at the earliest before a major accident happens.

Education loans

Large number of students depend on bank loans for pursuing higher education. The youngsters and their parents should be aware of the interest rate, repayment options, moratorium period and guarantors who are essential for the sanctioning of loans.

The beneficiaries should definitely know about the risks of non-payment. This will bring down the major non-payment cases to a considerable extent.

The banks should make it a point to give reminders to students for repayment without interest during the holidays. But the banks normally do not do this. The government should initiate steps for educating the students of Plus Two on the bank loan formalities. The students and the parents too should read the instructions before affixing their signature on the bank documents.

Vehicle parking

While thanking the police for removing the encroachments and regulating vehicle parking near the Suramangalam Uzhavar Sandhai, I wish to draw their attention to the indiscriminate parking of two-wheelers on the stretch leading to Railway Junction from Uzhavar Sandhai. The indifferent attitude of the people of parking two-wheelers on the sides of this narrow road is causing much hardship to other road users.

Re-lay road

Recently, I visited Tiruvannamalai temple by bus to offer prayers. The road from Uthangarai to Tiruvannamalai is in a very bad shape. The State Government should take immediate steps for re-laying this road in the interest of the large number of devotees visiting Tiruvannamalai Temple.

Expedite process

Many senior citizens are not regularly getting the old age pension in Salem district. A large number of senior citizens depend on the old age pension for meeting their regular expenses. The Revenue officials should conduct proper enquiries and come forward to sanction the old age pension to all the deserving people.

Go for solar lights

Recently, due to heavy rainfall, power cut was witnessed in many parts of the city. The roads were dark causing much hardship to the pedestrians. The electronic traffic signal lights too went off on the main thoroughfares such as Five Roads, Four road, Railway Junction, bypass roads etc due to load shedding. The non-functioning of the signal lights affected the flow of traffic in the entire city. The Corporation and the police could think of installing solar signal lights, which will function even during the power shut downs.

Right on time again

This is in connection with the letter that appeared in these columns a couple of weeks ago on the prompt running of trains. I went to receive my cousins coming to Salem from Chennai by the West Coast Express at Salem Railway Junction on May 12. I was taken by surprise when the train arrived on platform No. 1 at the right time. The Railways should leave no stone unturned to maintain punctuality in the operation of trains.

Clean drains regularly

The poor condition of the drainage near the AVR junction in Salem city is a cause for concern. Even after a light drizzle, the drainage gets choked leading to overflow of sewage. This poses serious health hazard. The drainage at this point should be cleaned daily.

Create more facilities

for schools

It is heartening to note that many government schools have fared very well in the recent Plus Two public examinations. A majority of the government schools are situated in the rural areas. They do not have adequate infrastructure facilities, like toilets, additional classrooms, library, drinking water connection etc. The Government should take steps for creating additional infrastructure facilities in the government. It could use the MP Local Area Development Fund and the MLA Local Area Development Fund for this purpose.

Late CBSE results

It is more than a fortnight since the Plus Two examination results were published. All the colleges, both government and private colleges, have already commenced the admission process. Many private colleges have already completed the admissions for major courses. But the results of CBSE Class XII have not been published so far. This causes much anxiety. The CBSE Board should publish the results at the earliest.

Clear garbage

The street opposite the Coronation ground in Krishnagiri town is a major business centre. Though dustbins are kept at various points here, they often overflow. Due to this, the garbage is found strewn all over the street and this caused health hazard. The municipality should keep more dustbins and also clear the garbage twice a day.
