Who is the funniest comedian of them all?

A new humour-centric show seeks to cultivate budding comic talent with the help of seasoned film industry artistes

After a long and tiring week, weekends seem the best time to settle on the couch and unwind with some humour.

And, channels seem to have figured out viewers’ needs with many of them allotting slots for humour-centric serials or programmes.

The latest in the list is ‘Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam’ that comes with a promise to take the audience on a laugh riot and also help create comedians.

What stands out in this show being telecast on Zee Tamizh TV are its four judges — veterans Kovai Sarala, Urvashi, Manobala and Ramesh — and its concept, says Ramji Thamotharan, the show’s creative director.

“We have four teams that will be mentored by each judge. The teams with eight participants will be pitted against each other to perform different genres of comedy,” he said. The show’s winner will be conferred the title of ‘Comedy King’.

Director and comedian Manobala says he was impressed by the show’s concept of budding talent being fine-tuned by judges and it made him return to television after nearly two years. “Though the film industry is my primary area of work, television allows me to reach out to the audience quicker. I am excited to share space with veteran artistes as judges,” said Manobala. The show will be aired on weekends at 7 p.m.

Binging time is

here, again

The second season of ‘Orange is the New Black’, the cult television series, ended in a cliff hanger much to the dismay of many fans.

Like many of them, Rashmi G., a fine arts student, is still waiting for some closure as she eagerly awaits the third season premiere on June 12.

From comedy dramas to psychological thrillers, fans in Chennai are gearing up to rendezvous with characters from their favourite television shows as June is going to witness the return of several of people’s favourite shows.

The first episode of ‘Hannibal’, the visceral story of the titular character with cannibalistic tendencies, is out on June 4 and other major fan favourites will follow in the coming weeks.

‘True Detective’, a show produced by HBO, is coming back for the second season with an entirely new setting and cast including Hollywood giants like Colin Ferrell and Vince Vaughn. ‘Under the Dome’, based on Stephen King’s 2009 novel of the same name, will also return for a fifth season on June 25.

Among the most-awaited shows returning this month is the legal drama ‘Suits’, which will see Gabriel Macht reprise the role of the iconic corporate lawyer Harvey Specter for the fifth season.

The show begins on June 24.

Sabrina Shah, a management student, is pulled into the series more by its characters than its plot.

She says, “Harvey is the reason I watch the show, he is so confident and charismatic. He has a solution to all the problems. But it isn’t without his young associate attorney Mike Ross and his wit.”
