A rally to create awareness on wearing helmets organised in Dharmapuri on Wednesday.

The police here on Wednesday organised a motor-cycle rally to create awareness on the Madras High Court directive making wearing of helmets mandatory from July 1.

Over 200 Home Guards, and police personnel participated in the 5km rally.

The court had directed officials to impound vehicle documents under Section 206 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and release of the same only on production of ISI certified helmet with purchase receipt in the two-wheeler rider’s name.

The directive includes installation of CCTV cameras at important junctions and roads including national highways to monitor two-wheeler riders and cancellation of driving licence of rule violators.

The court had asked the police to create an awareness about the order through short films, distribution of pamphlets, and advertisements.

Superintendent of Police J. Loganathan said that the directive was significant for the district that had seen a number of accidents involving two-wheelers.

Later in the evening, a short film on road safety was screened, and an awareness programme was organised. District Collector K. Vivekanandan participated.
