Demanding supply of protected drinking water to their village, a group of women from Padapparkulam in Nanguneri taluk submitted a petition in the office of the Collector here on Thursday.

The petitioners said that about 1,000 people of their village had been consuming salty groundwater with above normal calcium content for the past several years.

Since the salty groundwater had caused renal problems owing to calcite formation, the villagers had to buy water from traders.

As the poor could not afford to buy the water in the long run, the Collector should take steps for resuming drinking water supply to the village through the combined drinking water scheme, they demanded.

“Though this scheme was in use seven years ago, supply of drinking water to Padapparkulam was stopped within a couple of months. If drinking water supply through this scheme is resumed, it will save the villagers from the adverse impacts of the salty water,” said P. Marthanda Kadavul of the village.
