The executive and general council of the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) has designated party founder Vijayakant as the permanent general secretary of the party and vested in him the full powers to take crucial decisions and appoint office-bearers to the party.

The resolution wase adopted unanimously at the executive and general council on Saturday.

Mr. Vijayakant was made permanent general secretary at a time when some of the party’s district units wanted his wife, the articulate Premalatha, to be designated general secretary. But she has not given any post.

In the in-camera deliberations, the executive and general council members also made Mr. Vijayakant’s relative L.K. Sudheesh and three others — former MLA B. Parthasarathy, Ilangovan and Savithri as deputy general secretaries, party sources said.

Describing the appointment of Banwarilal Purohit as the Tamil Nadu Governor on ‘Vijayadasami’ day as a significant development, Mr. Vijayakant said the AIADMK government headed by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami would be toppled in four or five days.

In his brief speech, he asked the people to reject the two Dravidian parties — AIADMK and DMK as well as the the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the coming elections alleging that they cheated the people.

Hitting out at the BJP government at the Centre, he said the party boasted of one India and one tax, but failed to ensure uniform school syllabus. He also criticised the implementation of NEET.

Criticising the frequent hike in prices of petrol and diesel, Mr. Vijayakant said his party would support the agitation called to protest against the price hike on October 2. He called upon the people and party cadre to boycott petrol and diesel on that day and inflict loss to the petroleum companies and governments.
