Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakant on Saturday urged Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah to prevail upon the Centre to implement the Supreme Court order allowing water level in the Mullaperiyar dam up to 142 feet.
Mr. Vijayakant along with 27 party MLAs called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum pressing his demands.
“The Government of India should ensure that Kerala abides by the decision of the Supreme Court in 2006 in the interest of unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country,” the memorandum stated.
Charge against Kerala
Later talking to the reporters, Mr. Vijayakant accused the Kerala government of whipping up emotions and endangering the harmony between the people of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
He said with food security legislation was in the process, the action of Kerala should not be allowed to create food scarcity in the country.
In another memorandum, he asked the government to call upon the Centre to renegotiate the agreement between India and Sri Lanka to avoid undue hardship to Tamil fishermen.
“The Indian government is extending help to the Sri Lankan Tamils affected by the civil war. It should also show same concern for fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who are attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy and facing false cases filed by the Sri Lankan government,” he said.
As regards foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail trade, he accused DMK president M. Karunanidhi of adopting double standards.
“In Tamil Nadu he is opposing the FDI. But in Delhi his party is supporting the Congress government's decision to go ahead with its proposal to allow FDI,” he alleged.
