Two persons, including a 13-year-old girl, were killed when a lorry hit two motorcycles at the Vettuvanam junction on National Highway 48 near Pallikonda on Sunday.

According to Pallikonda police, the victims were Janani, a resident of Kumaran Street in Vettuvanam, and Mani (62), a resident of A. Mottur, Ananganallur in Gudiyatham.

Janani and her mother Selvi were riding pillion on her 17-year-old sister’s two-wheeler. The three were travelling from Pasumathur to Vettuvanam when the accident occurred.

Mani was also riding a two-wheeler. When the two vehicles were trying to cross the junction, the lorry first hit the two-wheeler on which Janani was travelling, and then hit Mani’s.

Janani was killed on the spot, while Mani died at the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital at Adukkamparai.

Police said the lorry driver fled the scene. But, the police traced the lorry later.

Following the accident, residents of the area staged a road blockade demanding steps to prevent frequent fatal accidents on the spot. Traffic was affected for a while.

According to police, residents have been demanding the construction of a bridge at the Vettuvanam junction for years. Police said the movement of vehicles was high during temple festival in the locality.
