Two persons were killed in a fire accident at a safety matches godown in Thendral Nagar here on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Anand (40) and S. Karuppasamy (50) of Kovilpatti. The duo had come to buy waste match sticks from the safety matches unit run by Rajesh Perumal. While handling the waste, chemical friction was said to have ignited a sudden ball of fire that engulfed them. Since both were trapped deep inside the godown, they could not escape and were killed on the spot at around 2.30 pm. Fire and rescue service personnel fought for nearly 30 minutes to put out the flames.
