Two arrested on cheating charge

Crime Branch officials on Friday arrested Philip Raja (48) and B. Ramakrishnan (21) on charges of duping Jyothi Basu, a realtor, and his friends, to the tune of Rs 61.5 lakh after introducing themselves as friends of U. Sagayam.

Official sources said the accused morphed a photograph of them standing with senior IAS officer U. Sagayam and told Jyothi Basu and others that they would help them procure 81 lorries seized by Mr. Sagayam from quarries, to be sold as scrap. It was only after paying the money, the complainants realised that they were cheated, the Crime Branch sources said.

22 injured as bus overturns

As many as 22 persons sustained minor injuries when a bus carrying textile unit workers overturned at Kunnathur near here on Friday.

The accident happened when one of the tyres of the bus got punctured. Investigation is on. - Staff Reporter
