Aggrieved over erratic supply of drinking water, residents of different areas coming under Tuticorin Corporation have sought the intervention of authorities to ensure regular supply of water.

People got potable water only once in eight days and many households were facing serious difficulties, K. Ramasamy of Bucklepuram said here on Tuesday.

As people had been reeling under sultry weather conditions lack of drinking water, the basic need, was a cause for concern. Nowadays, many people were forced to buy potable water cans from private dealers. Capitalising on this situation, water can sellers had increased the price of water cans . Normally, one can of water would be sold at Rs. 25, but now, it was sold at Rs. 35. There was no mention of price or manufacturer’s name marked on many cans. The authorities concerned should take steps to stop such irregularities, he said.

Sources from Corporation said leakage of water had been identified from the third water pipeline at Vallanadu. Owing to pressure, the pipeline burst. A team of officials, led by Corporation Executive Engineer S.A. Rajagopalan, inspected the leakage. Twenty five workers had been involved in repairing the pipeline, which was expected to be over in a day or two. Around 10,000 litres of water was wasted from the leak. On a daily average, 270 lakh litres of water would be supplied through three pipelines, of which the first and the second pipelines would conduct 85 to 90 lakh litres. The rest of the quantity would be supplied through the third pipeline, , sources added.
