In a bid to regulate the procedures pertaining to the levy of stamp duty, the State government on Monday introduced the Tamil Nadu Stamp Bill, 2019, in the Assembly.

The Indian Stamp Act, 1899, administers the law in relation to stamps in force in the State.

At present, Bills containing amendments to the Act have to be referred to the President, since it is an existing law with respect to one of the matters enumerated in the Concurrent List in the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution.

“Amendments to the Act proposed in the State could not be brought into force expeditiously. To facilitate the process of bringing into force the amendments proposed in the State and to regulate the procedure relating to the levy of stamp duty, the government has decided to enact a separate law,” the Bill stated.
