The Tamil Nadu government has assured the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that investigation into the sensational case against former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi would be completed expeditiously.

In a letter to the Director of Enforcement Karnal Singh, a copy of which was made available to The Hindu , State Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi said that “the Government of Tamil Nadu is seized of the matter and will ensure that the investigation is completed expeditiously. The matter will be closely followed up and I shall keep you posted of the progress made,” he said.

Mr. Mardi’s response comes in the backdrop of a strongly worded letter of Mr. Karnal Singh stating that the inability of the Tamil Nadu police in logically concluding investigation of the case was causing embarrassment to Indian Law Enforcement agencies in the international forum, particularly the Interpol.

It was pointed out Mr. Lalit Modi had submitted to the Interpol a portion of the internal report of the Chennai City Police which stated that the case (against him) was more civil than criminal in nature and that the offences were purely financial in nature and involved huge sums of money in foreign exchange. Wondering how a copy of the internal report was leaked to the accused, Mr. Karnal Singh suggested an inquiry into the matter. However, Mr. Niranjan Mardi said there was no such internal report in the Chennai Police as alleged by Lalit Modi.
