Budding playback singer B. Sruthi Narayan became the district topper in the Plus Two examinations, results of which were announced on Thursday as the backward district made a quantum jump, capturing the eighth rank in the State with an overall pass percentage of 94.66.

Sruti was recording a song at Media Beats at Saligramam in Chennai on Thursday, little realising she has emerged as the district topper scoring 1,172 out of 1,200 marks. A student of National Academy Montessory Matriculation Higher Secondary School, she pursued music and studies with equal interest.

“Music and studies are like my two eyes and I wanted to excel in both and become a famous playback singer and a banker,” Sruti, who scored centum in Commerce and Accountancy, told The Hindu over phone. After completing her graduation, she plans to do her Master of Business Administration (MBA), she said.

R. Pragathi of Vivekananada Vidayalaya Higher Secondary School in Rameswaram has scored 1,174, two marks above her, but the district topper rank eluded her as she chose Hindi as her first language.

C. Padmavathy, Chief Educational Officer (in charge), is happy that the overall pass percentage has increased by 1.6 per cent compared to last year and the district moved to the eighth rank from 13th rank. Of the 121 schools in the district, 34 schools — 10 government schools, six aided schools and 18 matriculations schools — came out with 100 per cent pass percentage.

M. Mageswari of Vivekananda Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary school in Rameswaram bagged the second rank in the district, scoring 1,170 marks and G Pragatheswaran of Syed Ammal Matriculation Higher Secondary school, the third rank with 1,168 marks.

For Pragatheswaran, the resolve to excel in studies began at the tender age of seven when his father died of heart attack and his mother, a flower vendor, told him that he could take care of the family only if he studied well.

Sivaganga

Sivaganga district registered an overall percentage of 94.17, making a marginal increase of 0.11 per cent over the previous year and managed to retain the 11th rank in the State. Of the 129 schools in the district, 38 schools — 13 government schools, 11 aided and 14 matriculation schools — registered 100 per cent pass, CEO S. Senthivel Murugan said.

A. Vimalini of Oxford Matriculation Higher Secondary School became the State topper with 1,181 marks. Becoming an IAS officer was her long-time desire and she would appear for the Civil services examination after completing a degree in civil engineering, she said. M. Meenakshi of Shri Vidhya Giri Matriculation Higher Secondary School has scored one mark above the topper, but missed the honour as she chose Sanskrit as first language.

Rhubiga of Maharishi Vidyamandir Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Karaikudi, became the second district topper with 1,180 marks and the third rank was shared by M. Ramanathan of Maharishi Vidyamandir and S. Balaganapathy of Sambaviga Higher Secondary School, with 1,170 marks, the CEO said.
