The Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) on Saturday urged the Union government to support a resolution to be moved in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) against Sri Lanka by the US for its alleged war crimes in the last phase of the war.

A meeting of the TESO, chaired by DMK president M. Karunanidhi, called upon the Centre not to fall prey to the designs of Sri Lanka, which had already sent its representatives to various countries to campaign against the proposed resolution. “Besides supporting the resolution, India should move a separate resolution for an independent international inquiry into the war crimes and human rights violations,” the TESO stated.

The meeting also made a demand for the implementation of the 13 amendment to provide adequate powers to the Northern Province in Sri Lanka.

“The Northern Province headed by its Chief Minister C.V.Wignesearan has already passed a resolution complaining that the Sri Lankan government had not devolved any power. Today, it has only watered down powers,” another resolution said.

No breakthrough

Alleging that the recent meeting between fishermen of Sri Lanka and India had failed to achieve any breakthrough, the TESO said 38 Tamil fishermen had been arrested even after the meeting.
