The Mahila Court here has sentenced six persons to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for abetting the suicide of a woman.

According to prosecution, G. Jebaraj (28) of Kadalaiyoor near Kovilpatti, who married A. Malathi (23) of Solai Colony in Sivakasi in 2008, consumed liquor frequently along with his friend Arumugakani from the same area.

When Malathi asked Jebaraj to snap his relationship with Arumugakani and stop consuming alcohol, she was verbally abused by her husband and her in-laws.

Frustrated over this, Malathi, mother of a boy baby, hanged herself on February 8, 2010. Even before Malathi’s father Antony and others could reach Kadalaiyoor, Jebaraj’s family cremated her body.

Based on a complaint from Mr. Antony, the Naalaattinputhur police registered a case.

Unsatisfied with the investigation of the Naalaattinputhur police, Mr. Antony approached the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court with the prayer that the case be transferred to CB-CID, which was allowed.

The CB-CID’s probe led to the arrest of Jebaraj, his parents Gnanamuthu (50) and Poomani (47), his sister Maria Thangam (40), Arumugakani (29), his mother Shanmugathaai (55) and seven others on the charge of abetting Malathi’s suicide.

Mahila Court Judge J. Flora on Thursday sentenced Jebaraj, Gnanamuthu, Maria Thangam, Poomani, Arumugakani and Shanmugathaai to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 52,000 each on them while acquitting all others.

A fine of Rs. 52,000 was imposed on each of them
