Students from Kancheepuram District, who secured State and district ranks in the class X and XII State board examinations, were recognised by the Kancheepuram District Self Financing Schools’ Association (KDFSA) on Thursday at Kamaraj Arangam.

Schools from the district that secured 100 per cent results were also awarded. The event began with a cultural performance by students — including that by special children from Opportunity School. It also lent a platform to reflect on the way ahead for schools and ways to match up to international standards.

Guest of honour C. Sylendra Babu, Additional Director General of Police of the Coastal Security Group, urged teachers to work for the pleasure of teaching.

Calling teacher development a “long neglected area in school education”, not just in the State, but also in the country, guest of honour, N. Ravi, Director, Kasturi and Sons Ltd., said that the teacher is the most important person in the learning experience. “Now that private schools have come of age, it is time to focus on another very important aspect, which is teacher development,” he said. He also urged schools to aim for excellence based on international standards. While patron of the Association R. Kishore Kumar, from the St. John’s Group of Schools, spoke about the need for inclusive schools and rethinking the conventional educational system, another patron N. Vijayan, from Zion Matriculation, said that Samacheer Kalvi is a blow to the standard of education.

S. Prince Babu Rajendran, president, KDFSA, S. Ravi Sundaram, secretary, KDFSA and A. Jaya Sagaya Sathish, treasurer were among those present. 27 students from member schools and 174 schools were awarded.
