Health Minister C. Vijay Baskaran on Wednesday told the Tamil Nadu Assembly that he and his department officials would meet the Union Health Minister on March 24, 2017, and would seek exemption this year too for Tamil Nadu from National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET).
He said, when Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he had requested him to give exemption to Tamil Nadu from NEET and sought the Centre's nod for the resolution adopted in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to dispense with NEET.
“We want exemption for seats in government medical colleges and government quota in private medical colleges and not for seats belonging to private colleges and deemed universities,” Mr. Vijay Baskar said replying to DMK member Govi. Chezhian.
He said the issue was taken up with Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar during his visit to Chennai.
“We have been fighting the issue legally. When late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa addressed a election meeting in Palayamkottai she promised to adopt a resolution seeking exemption from NEET. Now we have passed the resolution and have obtained the Governor's nod for it. We have sent it to the Centre for approval,” he explained.
