Tamil Nadu government partially reduces bus fare

Under the revised structure the minimum ticket fare in MTC buses would be ₹4 against the previous rate of ₹5 and the maximum fare would be ₹22 against the old rate of ₹23.

The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday announced a partial rollback of bus fares after it came under attack from the opposition and commuters over the January 19 steep hike in fares .

A notification issued by the State Transport department said the reduced fares in all the eight State Transport Corporations (STCs) including the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai would come into effect from Monday morning.

Under the revised structure the minimum ticket fare in MTC buses would be ₹4 against the previous rate of ₹5 and the maximum fare would be ₹22 against the old rate of ₹23. This new rate is applicable for 28 stages.

For mofussil buses having 20 stages the minimum fare has been fixed at ₹4 against the old rate of ₹5 and the maximum rate has been fixed at ₹18 against ₹19.

For long distance buses the State government has announced reductions according to the various categories of buses including air-conditioned, ultra deluxe, deluxe, express and ordinary buses. The new fares announced per kilometre for the different categories are - 58 paise per kilometre (for 10 kms) in ordinary buses against the old fare of 60 paisa per kilometre, 75 paise per kilometre (for 30 kms) in express buses against the old fare of 80 paise, 85 paise per kilometre (old fare 90 paise) in deluxe services, ₹1 (old fare ₹1.10) per kilometre for Ultra deluxe and ₹1.30 per kilometre (old fare ₹1.40) for air-conditioned buses.
