“Tamil Nadu stands first in cadaver transplantation in the country. We are ten times ahead of several States in this field,” said Health Minister C. Vijaya Bhaskar.

Addressing a review meeting with health officials here on Thursday, he said that the State’s cadaver transplants were 10 times more when compared to Andhra Pradesh that stood second in the country.

Speaking about communicable diseases, he said that 2,000 to 3,000 dengue cases were detected in Malaysia. While communicable diseases caused trouble in northern States and New Delhi, swine flu haunted Kerala. But such diseases did not affect Tamil Nadu owing to effective preventive measures, continuous monitoring and follow up action. Combined efforts of staff in primary health centres, district administration, education department and anganwadis helped the State to control communicable diseases effectively, he said.

“Communicable diseases are common and high in all places during winter, particularly in October, November and December. The State government will not tolerate any loss of life owing to communicable disease under any circumstances. Creating awareness of prevention and early detection should be intensified. Concerted efforts are the need of the hour,” Mr. Vijaya Bhaskar said.

The number of cases affected by communicable diseases in the district had come down this year when compared to the total cases recorded in the previous year.

He appealed to the health officials to extend full cooperation in eradicating dengue and other communicable diseases. Minister for Power R. Viswanathan accompanied him.
