Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami condemned the gunning down of a fisherman from Rameswaram by the Sri Lankan Navy and announced a solatium to family of the deceased. He also announced monetary relief for the family of another fisherman who was injured.

“Tamil Nadu government has been raising the issue with the Central government over the continuous harassment by the Sri Lankan Navy against fishermen from Tamil Nadu who go for fishing for their livelihood. I strongly condemn the firing incident,” Mr. Palaniswami said in a statement.

He also announced a solatium of ₹5 lakh to the family of the deceased fisherman and ₹1 lakh to the family of the fisherman, who was injured in the incident on Monday night.

According to the Chief Minister, the fishermen from Rameswaram were fishing in the “traditional fishing area” in the Palk Bay around 9.30 and were fired upon by the Sri Lankan Navy without prior warning. One of the fisherman was killed on the spot, he added.
