The CB-CID of the Tamil Nadu police on Friday detained a key suspect in the case from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

The suspect is believed to have facilitated the NEET impersonator for Udit Surya, who had joined the Theni Medical College fraudulently and was arrested recently.

Sanjay Kumar Gurudin, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Thiruvananthapuram Range, told The Hindu that he was aware that a T.N. police team was in the State capital in search of the suspect.

However, the TN police did not seek any help from local law enforcement. Hence, the State police had scarce information about the movements of the TN team.

An officer said the police had taken custody of George Joseph.

The accused was allegedly associated with a coaching centre.

Quoting his counterparts in TN, the officer said the police suspected the man, among other accused, had helped a doctor’s son in Chennai secure a slot in a top medical college by employing a surrogate to write the NEET for him by proxy. The case registered in Theni involved use of falsified records, including hall tickets. The Kerala police said no similar fraud had been reported in the State.
