Suicide bid by woman foiled

June 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - TUTICORIN:

A woman and her son attempted to commit suicide after dousing themselves with kerosene in front of the Collectorate here on Monday.

However, swift move by police personnel on duty near the portico of the Collector’s office foiled their attempt. J. Latha of Boopalarayarpuram in Tuticorin claimed that mobile phone of her son Prem Kumar, who was studying Diploma in Computer Science Engineering in a polytechnic college, was seized by the college authorities on March 12. The college must return the cellphone to her son, she said.

However, when contacted, the college administration said that as per Anna University norms, students were prohibited from using cellphones on college premises. Six months back, two students were suspended for taking photographs of teachers in the class using their cellphones. The possession of cellphones by students inside the college would also lead to incidents of ragging and eve-teasing, they said.
