Students to spread word on dengue prevention

January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:10 am IST - DINDIGUL:

School students have become ambassadors for dengue prevention and will campaign on preventive measures as Dindigul Corporation health officials popularise ‘Think Clean’ mantra to enable them propagate it among family members and neighbours.

Launching the clean campaign at St. Joseph’s Girls Higher Secondary School here on Tuesday, Municipal Health Officer M. Anitha explained about ill effects of Dengue and preventive measures to be followed.

She asked students to check whether all water containers in their houses were covered with lids properly because mosquitoes causing dengue bred only in pure water.

“Even rainwater in coconut shells and empty tea cups would become an ideal place for multiplication of mosquitoes causing and spreading dengue fever. The students should take this message to their neighbours and persons known to them irrespective of their age,” she added.

The message given to 4,000 students in the school will certainly reach 40,000 people in the corporation because children will spread the message quickly to many in a short time.

“Word of mouth campaign will have a deep impact than other campaigns. So we have been concentrating on educational institutions for better results. Action of students will have better impact among the community. Mass campaigns in schools will help us cover more people from different parts of the town at one place,” she also said.
