Students, teachers of Erode college anticipate CM’s sanction of government college status

The takeover of State’s reigns by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has infused hope in the minds of teachers and students of Chikkiah Naicker College for fulfilment of their long-pending demand for conversion of the institution into a government arts and college.

Started in 1954 as Mahajana College by the Mahajana School Board, the institution was renamed as Chikkaiah Naicker College in memory of M. Chikkaiah Naicker who donated the initial money. The Board collected funds from the public, including E.V.Ramasamy (Periyar) who later became the founder-president of the Board. The government donated 52 acres. However, in a couple of decades, the Board became dysfunctional. In 1995, the government dissolved the Board through a gazette notification. The college is being administered by the Joint Director of College Education. The government pays the salary for the staff, and hence there is not going to be any additional financial burden on the government, according to Association of University Teachers (AUT). As students of government arts and science colleges, the learners from rural areas will be in a position to derive benefit from government schemes.
