The city police on Friday arrested a 23-year-old college student on the charge of stealing 80 sovereigns of gold jewellery from an Inspector’s house at the police quarters in Shevapet here on May 17.

K. Kabilan served in police stations in Salem and was recently transferred to Narcotics Control Bureau in Tiruchi. His wife was residing in Dharmapuri while their daughter Santhini (22) was pursuing B.Sc. at a private college in the city. Their house in the quarters was kept locked and Mr. Kabilan and family used to visit occasionally. On May 17, Kabilan found the front lock open and the 80 sovereigns of gold jewellery kept in the house missing while other items remained intact.

Based on his complaint, the Shevapet police registered a case and five special teams were formed. The team arrested R. Manikandan (23) of Thoppur in Dharmapuri district and recovered the jewellery.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) T. Dinakaran told presspersons that Santhini and Manikandan were lovers and they married in Namakkal last month. After her examination on May 8, both decided to flee from their homes. She gave her house key to Manikandan to take the jewellery so that they could use them.

Manikandan was produced in the court and lodged at Salem Central Prison.
