Sanitation camps and mass cleaning programmes would be conducted in village panchayats, unions, municipalities and the Dindigul corporation shortly to make them clean and tidy and to prevent outbreak of diseases, said Collector T.N. Hariharan.
Kick-starting the cleaning exercise at the farmers’ shandy at NGO Colony here on Monday, he said that 900 workers had been deputed for cleaning operations in the district. Health workers had been conducting awareness campaign in rural and urban areas on mosquitoes that spread dengue fever and preventive measures being taken. Community participation was important to keep the surroundings clean, he added.
Health officials had been advised to closely monitor problem areas and detect symptoms of diseases so that th3e situation could be brought under control, he said. School children cleaned the farmers’ shandy and distributed pamphlets to the public. Health officials explained the types of mosquitoes, their breeding habits and places where mass breeding occurred. They also advised vegetable vendors and buyers to close drinking water containers with lid as drinking water was the main breeding place for such mosquitoes.
