The street theatre artists here have urged the government to set up an exclusive school to promote street plays and arts.
Marking the silver jubilee celebrations of the ‘Therukoothu Payirchi Sangam’, formed here to protect street theatre and artists, the association also called upon the government to lower the pension age from 60 years to 55 years and hike the pension. The artists, who were presently paid a pension of Rs.1, 500, should be given Rs.3,000.
The Sangam pointed out that a number of street artists were yet to be given welfare board membership cards.
The cards should be distributed to enable them access to welfare schemes.
The association has also requested the government to provide houses for street theatre artists living in poverty.
Among demands for reviving the street theatre, the Sangam has called for allocation of an exclusive performance slot in all government events and festivals and use the artists to propagate the welfare schemes and achievements of the government.
