May 30, 2011 12:03 am | Updated 12:03 am IST - VELLORE:

Quick steps will be taken to acquire 9.5 acres of encroached land near the new bus stand in Vellore for expansion of the bus stand, V.S. Vijay, Health Minister said here on Sunday.

Talking to newspersons after receiving petitions from the public at the Vellore MLA's office, Dr. Vijay said steps would be taken to find a permanent solution to the drinking water problem in Vellore through the scheme of bringing water from the Cauvery near Mettur.

During the review meeting held on Saturday, he held detailed discussions with officials of the departments concerned on the ways of solving the drinking water problem, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and expediting road improvement schemes in Vellore district, he said.

Action would be taken on a war-footing to revive the Government Pentland Hospital as a 24-hour full-fledged hospital and bring it to public use.

On sand smuggling, he said that the present government would take steps to prevent smuggling and bring substantial revenue to the government through sale of sand.

Dr. Vijay said that he had sought the opinion of the Highways Department on whether to construct a long flyover or a shorter bridge to ease traffic congestion caused by frequent crossing of road by pedestrians, mostly patients and their relatives, in front of the Christian Medical College Hospital on Dr. Ida Scudder Road.
