States asked to increase spending on education

February 12, 2012 03:06 am | Updated 03:06 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The progress of students' should be continuously monitored by teachers and parents, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari said here on Saturday.

Asked about the recent incident in Chennai, where a student of class 9 murdered his teacher, she said: “Parents have to keep a close watch on the changes in the behaviour of children and also monitor the kind of company they keep. Children are the joint responsibility of the parents and teachers.”

Speaking at the second day of All India Editors' Conference on Social Sector Issues organised by the Press information Bureau, she said that owing to continuous disruption of Parliament, around 14 Bills relating to reforms in education were yet to be passed. She urged all political parties to allow Parliament to function. Ms. Purandeswari appealed to State governments to increase their spending on education. “Education is a cooperative responsibility of both the Government of India and States. We need to work together. The Central government's target is to spend up to 6 per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) on education. Currently, 3.78 per cent of country's GDP is utilised for expenses in the education sector.”
