Speed up work on second airport: PMK

PMK founder Dr. Ramadoss on Friday demanded that the work on the second airport for Chennai city be quickened.

In a statement, Dr. Ramadoss said that it was important for Chennai to have another airport to deal with the ever-growing air traffic thanks to the massive growth of the city.

“In 1972, the Chennai airport came into the control of Airports Authority of India and it had very few flights operating from there. However, more than 40 flights take off from Chennai,” Dr. Ramadoss said and added that cheaper flights had resulted in higher traffic and thereby causing congestion at Chennai airport.

He said expansions and improvements in the Chennai Airport could only handle the increase in passenger traffic for the next seven years.

“While many areas on the outskirts of Chennai were identified such as Sriperumbudur, Gummidipoondi, Madhurandhakam and Uthiramerur, it is learnt that Madhurandhakam has been identified. The government should build this airport in the next five years,” he said.
