An eight-ft statue of the late DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi, will be unveiled at the party headquarters — Anna Arivalayam — by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on December 16.
Chief Ministers Pinarayi Vijayan (Kerala), Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh), H.D. Kumaraswamy (Karnataka) and V. Narayanasamy (Puducherry) are expected to participate in the event, a DMK press release said.
No approval
Party sources said that although they had submitted a representation to the Chennai Corporation, seeking permission to install the statue near the statue of party-founder C.N. Annadurai on the Open Space Reservation area (OSR) land, they had not received the approval so far. “We have decided to shift Anna’s statue from the OSR land, so that Kalaignar’s (Karunanidhi) statue can be installed near it. Let us see whether the Corporation responds favourably or not,” a leader said.
The statue of Anna will be renovated and reinstalled. Minjur-based sculptor Deenadayalan is making Karunanidhi’s statue.
