‘Smokeless Pongal’ celebrations

Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan participated in “Smokeless Pongal” celebration organised in Agastheeswaram town panchayat on Wednesday.

As part of creating awareness of ill-effects of burning plastic waste, the “Smokeless Pongal” fetivities were organised in Agastheeswaram from January 7 to January 14. At the valedictory function, Mr. Chavan inaugurated an awareness exhibition and distributed coconut, mango and albis saplings and vermi compost kits to the members of self-help groups (SHGs) and six sanitary workers who had collected plastic waste from the public.

As part of creating awareness among the public of celebrating a smokeless festival, a consultative meeting was organised with officials, heads of educational institutions and SHG members on January 9.

An awareness rally on avoiding burning of plastic waste was also conducted as part of the celebrations.
