The Mahila Court here has sentenced an old man to life imprisonment for murdering his daughter’s mother-in-law. According to prosecution, S. Durairaj (71) of EB Colony in Salaiputhur in Kovilpatti, who had married his daughter Devi to one Muthu from the same area, was pestering his son-in-law to leave his mother’s house and live separately. However, Mr. Muthu refused to accept it, saying that he and his wife had to live with his mother Shanmugathai (55), as none was there to take care of his widowed mother.

When his repeated attempts to pacify Mr. Muthu failed, an agitated Durairaj went to the house of Shanmugathai and stabbed her to death on November 11, 2010.

Mahila Court Judge J. Flora awarded life imprisonment to Durairaj on Friday and slapped a fine of Rs. 5,000 on him for murdering his daughter’s mother-in-law.
