Employees of State Bank of Travancore struck work on Thursday and staged demonstration in front of the bank’s Samathanapuram branch to highlight their demands.

The protesting bankers said the Union Government should not merge the five subsidiary banks of State Bank of India (SBI) with the parent bank and give up the sustained attempts being made to crush the employees’ unions of these banks.

Children of the bankers, who die in harness, should be given appointment in the bank on compassionate grounds. The quantum of housing loan being extended to the bank employees should be increased considering the inflation and unprecedented price rise of construction materials.

Existing vacancies in the bank should be filled up and the ‘service conditions’ applicable for SBI should not be imposed upon the employees of SBT, its subsidiary bank, the protestors said.

SBT employees working in 19 branches of the bank in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts participated in the agitation, which was presided over by Ganesan, president of Tirunelveli, Tuticorin Districts Bank Employees’ Association.
