The family members of late Sasi Perumal will commence relay fast in his native E. Mettukkadu village near here to press for the introduction of total prohibition in the State from Friday (September 4). The fast will continue till the end of the current Assembly session.

K. Selvam, younger brother of Sasi Perumal, told The Hindu that the family of late Gandhian expected the government to make announcement on introduction of total prohibition in the State in the current Assembly session. But, so far the government has not made any announcement.

S. Vivek, the elder son of Sasi Perumal, observed a token fast in the village on Independence Day. This was followed by a day-long fast by family of Sasi Perumal in his native village on August 24, the opening day of the Assembly session to draw the attention of the government.

Mr. Selvam said that he has given a petition to the Makudanchavadi police seeking permission for observing the first day’s fast on Friday in front of the Gandhi statue in the nearby Sidharkovil village. But the police refused permission.

However, the family of Sasi Perumal, including his elder brother K. Venkatachalam, will go ahead with the fast plan in front of his memorial in E. Mettukkadu village on Friday.

Sasi Perumal died during a protest demanding closure of a Tasmac liquor outlet in Kanyakumari district recently.
