Collector M. Karunakaran inaugurated the sanitary napkin manufacturing unit at Palayamkottai Central Prison on Monday.
As the prison inmates are trained in a range of trades to make them productive even as they are serving their sentence, the Indian Overseas Bank Rural Self Employment Training Institute (IOBRSETI) trained them in making sanitary napkins, which are being given free of cost to the poor girl students of government schools and colleges.
On coming to know about this, Dr. Karunakaran released Rs.4.50 lakh on December 24 last for creating adequate infrastructure, including pad pressing machine, pulverizer etc. for making the sanitary napkins in large number in a designated area of the central prison.
As work on the sanitary napkin-making unit was completed, the Collector inaugurated it on Monday in the presence of R. Kanagaraj, Superintendent, Palayamkottai Central Prison.
After the prison bazaar, ‘Freedom’, was inaugurated recently, the public can get fresh vegetables, snacks, breakfast, biryani and tiffin in the evening, all at the cost much lesser than the market price.
