Police have secured six men on the charge of raping a 21-year-old Russian tourist in Tiruvannamalai. The tourist was found unconscious in a service apartment in the town and then, admitted to a hospital.
According to officials, the woman was staying in Tiruvannamalai for nearly a week. She was found unconscious and ‘drugged’ in the apartment and was taken to a private hospital by one of the six men, who have been picked up for inquiry, and an apartment staff. The hospital administration informed the police as there were injuries on the woman’s body, including bite marks. She was taken to the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital for examination on Monday evening.
“She has regained consciousness but is unwilling to speak. We have picked up a few suspects and are conducting inquiries. On Wednesday morning, we will be making a requisition to the magistrate to obtain a statement under section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure,” a senior police official said. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Vellore range, and Superintendent of Police, Tiruvannamalai are conducting inquiry with the woman.
A translator has been engaged to talk to her. As of now, the Tiruvannamalai Town police have registered a case under Section 376 (punishment for rape) read with Section 511 of Indian Penal Code.
