In a bid to raise awareness about safe driving, students in large numbers took out a rally organised here on Tuesday. The awareness rally that commenced near Rajaji Park on Palayamkottai Road was flagged off by Collector M. Ravikumar in the presence of Assistant Superintendent of Police P. Arun Sakthi Kumar.

The rally was taken out as part of the 26th Road Safety Week celebrations, which commenced on January 11, with this year’s theme being ‘Safety is not just a slogan, it’s a way of life.’

The participants reached out to the public and campaigned on road safety.

The campaigners carried placards highlighting the importance of road safety and fatal risks caused by vehicles.

The rally proceeded through the thoroughfares of the town and culminated at the starting point.

Regional Transport Officer K. Anand said various competitions for students, including essay writing, drawing and elocution, on road safety awareness were scheduled on Sunday.

Cash prizes would be given to the winners, he pointed out.
