The Madras High Court has banned, until further orders, the recital of the Tamil Prabandam at a temple in Kancheepuram following a dispute.

Though puja holidays have been declared for the Madras High Court, Justice Vaidyanathan on Thursday held a special sitting at his residence to hear an urgent case filed against the proposed recital of Tamil Prabandam of Acharya Vedanta Desika at Varadarajaswamy Temple in Kancheepuram.

After hearing the petitioner’s counsel R. Meenal and Special Government Pleader M. Maharaja representing the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, the judge banned the recital of the Tamil Prabandam till further orders.

“Temple is a place of worship where anybody can pray. Unfortunately, as there is a difference between Vadakalai and Tenkalai of Iyengar community, the issue is yet to attain finality. As long as this globe exists in the orbit, their differences would not be resolved. Instead of terming themselves as human beings, they should first know the importance of being human,” the judge observed in his interim order.

Meanwhile, Saraswati Puja holidays for the Madras High Court between October 15 and 21 this year have virtually turned out to be a ‘no holiday’ week since it has been functioning almost every day.

While the registry worked full day on Monday for filing of cases to be heard by the vacation court, Justices S. Vaidyanathan and Krishnan Ramasamy sat in the court on Tuesday as well as Wednesday to hear those cases.

On Friday too, the High Court Registry informed the judge about yet another urgent case having been filed regarding the anointment of a Jeeyar in Srirangam in Tiruchi.
