Solid waste floating in the drain near the Government College for Women, Kumbakonam.

The drain near the Government Women’s College, Kumbakonam, has turned into a garbage dump making it a health hazard. It has become a breeding zone for mosquitoes. Authorities concerned should take action.

in Nachiarkoil

The important water bodies of Nachiarkoil are being ignored by the public and the authorities. The inlet and outlet canals are not maintained and are filled with waste material. The tank bunds have been encroached upon. The authorities concerned should take action to protect the tanks and preserve the water table of the village.

In the road leading to CRC , near the old bus stand, the manhole has been covered with plants and other waste. The road has become dangerous for schoolchildren and two-wheeler riders as a large number of buses pass through this road.

rampant

In recent days, power shutdown has been rampant in the interiors of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts. The district administration has not brought it to the knowledge of the government. With the examinations fast approaching, the schoolchildren and college students are under great stress because of power cuts. The State government should take steps to address this problem, especially because Mamaham in Kumbakonam is round the corner.

water free of cost

The latest news reveals that there is good demand for Amma drinking water in Thanjavur Bus stands, which gets sold out before noon. Instead of packing the water and getting it transported from various zones, installing a water purifier to provide the water supply free of cost will improve the hygienic conditions and help the travellers. And it will be a good improvement and appreciated over the various Amma schemes.

to visit libraries

Reading habit is on the wane and very few schoolchildren are seen in public libraries. Gone are the days when a schoolboy or a schoolgirl was spotted seated with dozens of books surrounding him or her and with eagerness they pen the notes for an assignment or essay competition and during summer holidays. I urged authorities to promote the use of public libraries, especially by schoolchildren.

auto fare

The Madras High Court has granted two more months to adopt a mechanism to revise autorickshaw fares in the State. In Tiruchi, although instructions were issued to fix the meters in all autorickshaws and strictly enforce the fare rule. Autorickshaw drivers continue to exploit the passengers.

to humanity

John Deway said: ‘Every great advance of science has issued from the new audacity of imagination.” Scientists Tu Youyou of China, William Campbell of the U.K., and Satoshi Omura of Japan, the Noble Prize Winners for medicine for the year 2015, have done an excellent and magnificent service to the humanity through their revolutionary research on parasite.

Tu Youyou’s work in Artemisinin-based drugs meant for combating malaria and the work of Campbell and Satoshi in Avermectin-based drug meant for combating river blindness and elephantiasis will go a long way in finding a lasting solution for combating the debilitating diseases caused by dreadful parasites and saving billion of lives from the clutches of parasites.

women employees

Women employees of the Tamil Nadu Agriculture College are subjected to haphazard and untimely transfers, at times from one district to another. A systemic overhaul of the whole mechanism of transferring women employees is the urgent need of the hour, particularly because most women are under stress because of multi-tasking. A counselling system may help them ease their predicament to some extent. Will the authorities concerned look into this perpetual problem?

Thirupanandal

I have been a regular visitor to the Thirupanandal local library. The library has good patronage. The staff are also helpful. The sore point is, it is located at the far end of Thirupanandal. The local town panchayat has offered to give a plot free for construction of the library building under the MPLAD scheme near the cattle pound. But the funds went unutilised. I request the authorities to take steps to build the library at the site.
