Actor Rajinikanth speaks at the 90th birthday celebration of former Tamil Nadu Minister R.M. Veerappan in Chennai on September 9, 2015.

MGR Kazhagam president Rm. Veerappan, a close friend of actor Rajinikanth, on January 18 expressed doubts if the latter could manage a stable political party.

The former Minister was talking to journalists on the sidelines of his party’s general council meeting in Chennai where it was decided to extend support to the DMK in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

To a query on Mr. Rajinikanth’s political aspirations, Mr. Veerappan described the former as a “great human being”, but remained doubtful on the actor's success.

“Rajinikanth is a great actor. He will work for the betterment of people. But I am doubtful as to whether he can manage a stable political party,” he said.

Mr. Rajinikanth had acted in six films produced by Mr. Veerappan.

Mr. Veerappan recalled that it was Mr. Rajinikanth who urged him to quit politics when he faced problems due to the actor’s comments condemning the “bomb culture” in Tamil Nadu, which angered then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. “He is a great human being and a great spiritual individual,” he said.

“AIADMK a partnership firm”

Asked about the AIADMK leadership, Mr. Veerappan said the present ruling party was “not AIADMK at all”. He termed the present dispensation a “partnership firm” that made business out of the AIADMK founded by M.G. Ramachandran.

“They are not bothered about politics or people. They only want to stay in power and earn money through their posts. My friends are now Ministers and are crorepatis. Instead of calling them Ministers, we can call them crorepatis. They might call themselves as AIADMK but MGR Kazhagam and I would not call them so,” he said.
