Rain in delta districts; woman electrocuted near Kumbakonam

As the northeast monsoon cast its spell over the delta districts brining intermittent and widespread rains to the region over the past two days, a woman was electrocuted at Kannarakudi near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district on Tuesday night.

In the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, Vallam in Thanjavur district registered 85 mm rainfall.

Tirupanandal police said that R. Malarkodi (40) of Adi Dravidar Street in the village, who worked as a cook at the noon meal centre, accidentally stepped on a live wire while returning home with her nephew M. Jayaselvan (6).

Malarkodi was electrocuted while Jayaselvan, who was holding her hand, was thrown off and was injured.

He was rushed to the Government Hospital, Tirupanandal, and later referred to the Kumbakonam Government Hospital.

Meanwhile, widespread and moderate rains lashed several parts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts on Tuesday and Wednesday while the sky remained overcast when there was a let up in the wet spell.

The rainfall recorded (in mm) in major centres across Thanjavur district in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday was Budalur 48.4, Kurungulam 43, Tiruvaiyaru 30, Thanjavur town 23, Lower Anicut 22.2, Tirukkattupalli 20.4, Orathanad 11.6, Neivasal Thenpathy 11.4, Tiruvidaimarudur 11.2, Kumbakonam 11, and Vettikkadu 10 mm.

PUDUKOTTAI: Annavasal in Pudukottai district recorded the maximum rainfall of 39 mm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Karaiyur recorded 14.20 mm and Gandharvakottai and Illupur recorded 12 mm each.
