In deference to demand of parents, the Railway authorities have secured CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) recognition for the Railway Mixed High School here.
Ever since the Anglo-Indian Board was subsumed by Samacheer Kalvi introduced by the State Government a few years ago, the school, which will be celebrating its centenary during 2015-16, had been grappling with shrinking enrolment.
Though with a higher accommodation capacity, the school had only 525 students on rolls. As employees of a Central-Government undertaking, parents had a natural desire for educating their wards in a CBSE school.
The Salem Railway Division thought it fit to convert the institution into a CBSE school rather than securing a Kendriya Vidyalaya, which is present in several railway colonies. The institution is equipped with buildings and other infrastructure conforming to CBSE requirements.
As per procedure, the school management not only obtained permission of the CBSE authorities, but also the concurrence of the State Government in the form of a ‘no-objection certificate.’ Appointment of new teachers has also helped in securing the CBSE affiliation. The school now has teacher strength of 30.
The switch over from Samacheer Kalvi to CBSE was announced by Divisional Railway Manager of Salem Division Shubhranshu on Wednesday while taking part in the re-opening function. The change takes effect for Classes I to IX; Class X will migrate to CBSE pattern next year, Mr. Shubhranshu said.
Accompanied by School Headmaster M. Dasan and G. Janarthanan, Divisional Personnel Officer of Salem Division, the DRM honoured academic achievers in the school. Twenty-five students who had scored centum in various subjects and one student who had scored the those who secured the top three positions received prizes and shields.
Mr. Shubhranshu handed over a group cash award of Rs. 10,000. The school has been producing cent per cent results consecutively for the last five years.
