R. Arul (42) of Bhajanai Koil Street, Narayanapuram in Jolarpet was arrested by a team comprising the Joint Director of Medical and Rural Health Services (JDMRHS), Vellore, a sub-inspector attached to the Jolarpet Police Station and a drug inspector on Tuesday night on a charge of practicing allopathy without possessing an MBBS degree.
Complaint
He was arrested on a complaint from the JDMRHS Dr. Manimegalai.
The accused was arrested under sections 417 (cheating) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code and sent for judicial remand.
Dr. Manimegalai told The Hindu that the quack was arrested following complaints from the public and the instructions of the District Collector. Arul, who possesses a D. Pharm degree was running a medical shop for nearly 10 years.
Set-up clinic
He closed the medical shop and set up a two-bedded clinic with a nurse. He was illegally practising allopathy for the last nearly two years.
The JDMRHS said that the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services will continue the surveillance against quacks and take steps to get them arrested. Five quacks have been arrested in Vellore district in the last one year, she said.
